30 minute study

I was at CTN the past weekend and it was so inspiring to be around so many talented artists. I got the opportunity to get my portfolio reviewed from some of my favorite artists and the one common critique I got was that I needed loosen up!
So, I decided to start doing some quick 30 min studies everyday. And, I decided to start small! Here is my 1st 30 minute study.

Bani

These are my 2 more rough Variations for my main character Bani.

I showed this character design to a friend and he said and I quote "What's up with her ears?". That's when I tried the next one. And I think I like her better with smaller ears!

My baby nephew!

Today I painted a portrait of my baby Newphew - Vedant. He is literally the CUTEST baby ever! Like Literally!!

The Final Painting :)

This is the step by step process of my painting. I wanted to have more breakdowns... But once I started to paint I got too involved!

And this is the photo reference I used:

Golu!

He is my second favorite character in Bani! He is this goofy, funny, magical character. I imagine him like a blob of wool with eyes and horns! Tried a lot of shapes for this guy... Still not sure if I am there yet...
But this is what I have so far!

From the thumbnails I posted before I combined and tweaked a few designs and came up with these 3. I am kind of leaning towards the 1st one from the left.

New Design for BANI

This is my new design for Bani :D
Very excited about this one. I still want to explore the shape for her eye a bit more... But this is how she would be dressed when she is sneaking out of the house

Library and Palace Thumbnails

Here are some of my design explorations for the Library... My inspiration for the library are the beautiful temples of Khajuraho. I picked them because they almost look like stack of books...Tried to incorporate that in my designs...

I also did a few designs for the palace... Tried to make them as different as I could from the Library. Both of these need to be majestic and beautiful but they also need to be Very Very different...

Pulled Auto Designs

I did some quick Pulled auto designs. They are just for background purposes. Though, I think they would make a good foreground object too... What do you think?

Studies...

After I had my story sketched out, I needed to design everything that would be a part of my story. I started with my characters... And I thought I would 1st get done with those; But, I have been jumping from designing characters to props to environments and also finding and shooting my own references.

Here are my house studies. I have tried to kind of distinguish the 3 places in my story giving them their own unique feature. So all the houses in the Kingdom would be very blocky and sort of messy. Trying to give the feeling of little space and people living on top of each other.

Sketching out the houses was quite a challenge. Mainly because I wanted to maintain the 'blocky'ness in each one of them. I am kind of happy with the way these turned out!

I also started to sketch out my main character - Bani. Bani is so close to my heart... I have been trying to get the right look for her for a very long time! And everytime I designed something and looked at it a couple of days later, I would find some flaw. This is my VERY initial look for Bani...

I kind of like how she looks here, but, I wanted to explore more. As, I started to sketch out my story and got to know my story a lot better, I realized since she was based in India, this wouldn't be something she wears All the time. I like the idea of her wearing these Big pants and kind of trying to look like a boy so she wouldn't be caught while sneaking out. I am going to incorporate that in my new designs too. But this is how she is going to look when she is not sneaking around!

These designs are pretty similar, with a few minor differences. I think I am going to further combine the 2 designs for my final BANI.

Master Copy - John La Farge

Another Master copy. This was probably one of the paintings that I struggled with the most! It took me forever to get the right colors !!
I initially thought this would be an easy painting... But once I started to paint I realized It wasn't as easy as it looked! As frustrating as the process was... I learned a lot through this Painting.

Thumbnail Skteches

Here are a few sketches for the Librarian. The clothing is inspired from Jodhpur, so its going to be some very rich looking fabric. He is the man in command, Rarely smiles, extremely stiff... All the while I was designing I had EGO in mind. It was so hard to not draw something similar to that character.
I had fun playing around with the shapes especially the turban. I am leaning towards the 1st and the last 2. Will probably mix them up and exaggerate the shape of the turban slightly more.

Excited to see how this guys turns out! :)

My little Graphic experiment!

Lately I have been very inspired with the simple graphic illustrations. I recently visited a friends house who appreciates a lot of different types of Art. He showed me a book he bought for his son. It's called Ramayana - Divine Loop hole. Its illustrated by Sanjay Patel. I was so inspired by the color choices and the shapes, the design; that I wanted to try something similar.

The next day I was designing the environment for my thesis which is based on Jodhpur, India. I came across this picture when I was going through my research and thought this would be a great reference to try the graphic illustration style

I started with a simple background and basic shapes. I have to admit it took a lot of attempts to get to this stage. After a lot of trial and error I was kind of satisfied with this

I then added details and I really did not know when to stop! I was having so much fun! :)
I wanted to have 2 focal points; The big blue house and the castle. Took me a while to figure that part out. Actually took me a while to achieve that. But, eventually it worked out! I am kind of happy with this one and was kind of fun too.

I hope you enjoyed this little "meant to be quick sketch" as much as I did. Let me know what you think!
And yeah, check out the illustrations by Sanjay Patel for the book. They are awesome!
Here's a link to his blog if anyone's interested to check out his work

Red Riding Hood

We had to visually develop a story of our choice which would be a 3d animated film. I chose Red Riding Hood. I mostly had an idea of what my characters would like. Though I had a tough time figuring out the look of the Woodcutter and the Wolf.
I am still not happy with the wolf. And I continue to redesign it.
Pretty Happy with how the Production Paintings turned out :)

This is the Maquette I made for one of the characters I designed for Red Riding Hood. GRAM

Landscape Paintings

AAhhh... How I LOVE to paint! These were the 'BEST' 15 weeks! I had never really painted with oils before... But just experimenting with different brush strokes, color palettes... was Amazing!

The 1st one is a Master copy of George Inness. I learnt so much from his paintings. The abstract nature of his backgrounds to his beautiful selection of colors! Once I did this painting I never painted the sky Blue!

The one below was the 1st Painting I did from a picture our teacher gave us. I remember so nervous. I just stood staring at my canvas and my paints for hours. And then once I started... I couldn't stop! :)

This one was on location at Sonoma Valley. Was a Beautiful day!

One of initial on location paintings. What a day! It was so foggy, so windy and soooo cold that we returned midway. This was at Tenesse Valley. I am really happy with the way this turned out :)

Tree study

15 Crazy weeks of Advanced Perspective

These are a few of my Illustrations from Advanced Perspective class. I explored various styles in this class. Having to do 3-4 Illustrations per week made me explore a lot of styles. I had never really tried the graphic style before. Here are a few of my "Style Experiments"

Bani

Hello all,
I am finally starting to blog! Have been wanting to start for a very long time now.
I am going to start with my thesis. My thesis is a Viz Dev for my story which is going to be a 3d animated film. I initially thought my story is pretty sorted out. But, as I started to thumbnail I realized a lot of things were missing, I had to fix a lot of stuff, edit , cut, rethink... But, finally I have a solid story that makes sense and is not too long. So here are some thumbnails...

Then I moved on to exploring a little bit of the lighting in my film. I figured Lighting is going to be a really important part of my film. I worked from the reference I found online. I still have to get my own references. Which means a photo shoot :D (Which I am really excited about!)

I know one thing for sure... I am going to have a hard time working with a limited color palette.
Thanks for viewing my work.
Please leave your comments. I would love to hear what you all think :)
